As the country draws closer to the "fiscal cliff," a national senior citizens group is mobilizing the elderly across the nation today in an attempt to save Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid from the budget cuts that will take effect Jan. 1 unless Congress reaches a compromise.
The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, a non-partisan, not-for-profit, is urging seniors to flood Congress with calls urging their senators and representatives not to reduce the deficit by slashing those programs.
"We're lobbying to take Social Security out of the equation so that it's not a bargaining chip," said 65-year-old Max Richtman, the committee's president. "And before more is taken out of Medicare, we should see what savings can be squeezed out of providers and not beneficiaries."
At 65, Rose Ellen McGarvey's sole income is the $1,200 she receives each month in Social Security, and the only medical coverage she has is Medicare.
"I'm very angry with the way they want to cut spending on the backs of seniors and the middle class," the Swampscott woman said. "The whole way this is being approached is, 'Let them eat cake.' "
